This course presents advanced topics in Interpersonal Practice in Integrated Health, Mental Health, and Substance Abuse. The topics may include emerging practice issues and advanced application of specific methods.

Student in the Detroit Scholars Program will receive permission to enroll in this section of the course.

This course will meet on the following Thursdays: 09/17, 10/15, 11/12, 12/10

Topic Description: This course aims to improve the understanding of delivering integrated behavioral health and primary care services with individuals across the life-span living with behavioral health challenges in medically underserved communities through engagement within the community and completing additional training to support their ability to implement knowledge into practice using trauma-informed and culturally responsive practices. Students will receive training to meet the State of Michigan Qualified Child Mental Health Professional guidelines.

Upon completion of the course, students will be able to:

Develop familiarity with the history of community mental health within Wayne County, Michigan to understand present-day community issues and change efforts happening in the county.

List two ways that systems of oppression impact the healthcare of Wayne County residents.

Describe and apply the concept of recovery enhancement in interpersonal practice with individuals, families and small groups.

Describe and apply a person-centered approach in interpersonal practice with individuals, families and small groups.

Identify the role of a Qualified Mental Health Professional in a community mental health setting
