This course presents advanced topics in Interpersonal Practice in Integrated Health, Mental Health, and Substance Abuse. The topics may include emerging practice issues and advanced application of specific methods.
Topic Description: Substance Use and Addiction in Social Work Practice introduces students across all SSW Pathways to foundational, evidence-based knowledge about substance use and addiction in social work. The course covers key areas such as clinical practice, social work interventions, advocacy, policy, and resources to enhance professional practice. Students will explore critical topics including stigma, the experiences of minoritized populations, and the biological foundations of substance use disorders (SUDs). Designed to address gaps or expand on content from other courses, this class provides an in-depth focus on SUDs, including the fundamentals of diagnosis and care for individuals with SUDs and co-occurring health or mental health conditions. Additionally, the course examines the pharmacology of commonly misused substances, their neurobiological effects, and the symptoms of intoxication and withdrawal, equipping students with a comprehensive understanding of addiction and its impact.
