This course presents advanced topics in Interpersonal Practice in Integrated Health, Mental Health, and Substance Abuse. The topics may include emerging practice issues and advanced application of specific methods.
Topic Description: This is an introductory course focused on the use of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (Fifth edition) Text Revision (DSM-5-TR) as a clinical tool to utilize as an organizational diagnostic structure including the etiology, the diagnostic process and nomenclature, treatment, referral, and prevention of mental and/or emotional disorders across the life span.
This course will focus on conceptualization and acquiring knowledge about diagnostic categories related to the most commonly occurring mental health concerns. Students will acquire knowledge of the process of diagnosis and case conceptualization to support effective treatment plans.
In addition to reviewing the development of the DSM from a historical perspective, the significant changes and updates in the latest version (DSM-5-TR), will be introduced and critically evaluated through the lens of privilege, oppression, diversity, and social justice.
