This course will emphasize experiential, active, and engaged learning components and operationalize the three SEED goals: 1) Strengthen connection and community at the School of Social Work, 2) Explore PODS (privilege, oppression, diversity, & social justice), and 3) Learn foundation-level social work skills. Each theme will begin by attending a shared welcome experience.
Only incoming MSW students enroll in this mini course. Mini-course Description: Facilitation is an essential social work skill. Facilitation helps a group of people to identify their common goals and move towards them. As you enter the field of social work, you may wonder how to best engage groups in a way that brings out their best views of themselves. This course invites students from all methods to explore activities and develop skills that are translatable to a variety of social work settings and professional roles. Whether you are working in an office, community or agency setting, the work involves helping individuals or teams achieve their dreams and objectives. Students will gain a toolbox of adventure-based techniques for facilitation, understand their theoretical relevance and practice them with each other, making for a fun and engaging course. Participants will develop practical interpersonal facilitation skills preparing them for their field experiences and their professional careers. Action will be invited into the room through games, art, writing, rituals, nature, and indoor and outdoor problem-solving activities. These hands-on activities will help you experience the techniques as a participant so you are better able to use them in the future. This experiential course will require active participation in order to internalize the learning.
