Cost of attendance is based on estimated standard student budgets set by the University Office of Financial Aid. Student budgets serve as a basis for awarding financial aid funds. These budgets reflect typical “modest but adequate” expense patterns of University of Michigan students based on research conducted by the Office of Financial Aid. The actual expenses of an individual student will vary based on their lifestyle. Students can use financial aid (scholarships/ grants and/or loans/work-study) funds to cover any item listed within the budget. It is important to note that students will not be allowed to receive financial aid in excess of their total student budget without requesting an increase in their budget from the University Office of Financial Aid. Budget increases are approved and determined by the University Office of Financial Aid.
