Can I apply separately to both the PhD program in Social Work and Social Welfare and the Joint Program in Social Work and Social Science?
Yes. However, you will need to prepare separate applications and apply separately to each program. If you apply to both, as part of the application process you will be asked to select your preference if accepted into both. Your selection will be used to inform admissions decisions.
Can you provide tips for the Social Work and Social Welfare program application?
The purpose of this document is to provide the applicant to the University of Michigan’s Social Work and Social Welfare tips for writing a strong application. This document also provides some insight into the priorities of the program: a commitment to training social work scholars who have a deep knowledge of social justice issues and the social work profession, and who are committed to serving vulnerable populations with a passion for improving/changing conditions through intervention research.
Do I need my official transcripts/ Can I send my official transcripts later?
You can submit unofficial transcripts from degree granting institutions as part of your application. However, official transcripts will be required if an offer of admission is made. Admission is contingent upon receipt of official transcripts. Failure to submit could result in revocation of admission offer.
Do I need to take the GRE?
No. While you can submit GRE scores, they are no longer required to apply or to be accepted into the program.
Do you offer a part-time or an online PhD?
No. You must be registered as a full-time student studying on campus to receive our funding package. Students are expected to devote full time to their studies and are supported financially to enable them to do that.
How are faculty selected to work with you?
Admitted students are assigned a faculty advisor. Faculty advisor assignments are determined based on availability, research fit, and the student’s preference as indicated on the application.
I am an international student. Am I eligible for funding?
Yes, you are eligible for the funding package described here. You are not eligible for certain fellowships and scholarships offered at the University of Michigan, or for training grants supported by the federal government.
I am an international student. What are the different English proficiency test that you accept and what are the acceptable score ranges?
- TOEFL (iBT, including the Home Edition and Paper Edition): 100 range with section scores 23+ in listening & reading and 21+ in speaking and writing.
- TOEFL Essentials: 10 range with section scores 10+
- IELTS / IELTS Indicator: 7.0 range with section scores 6.5+
- ECPE: Certificate with all sections at least a C
May I apply to the PhD program in Social Work and Social Welfare without having an MSW Degree?
No. Unlike the Joint Program, to apply and be accepted into the Social Work and Social Welfare program you must already have your MSW degree.
What are my chances of securing employment upon graduation from the Social Work and Social Welfare PhD program?
We expect Social Work and Social Welfare PhD program graduates to experience success on the job market given the high ranking of the School of Social Work and its highly respected faculty body.
