Professor Lisa Wexler’s new curriculum on substance use is featured as part of U-M’s Life-Changing Education initiative. The five-session online course combines research-based strategies with cultural and local wisdom, shared via conversations.
“Rather than focusing on abstinence-only approaches, the curriculum supports understanding the complex reasons behind substance use and recovery, and promotes support and prevention through relationships, community values, and collective action,” said Adjunct Lecturer Elizabeth Evans, who instructs the course.
“Our approach is very applicable to many different people, and offers an opportunity for people to talk about their experiences, share their knowledge, and develop new ways of preventing and addressing harmful substance use that generate hope,” said Wexler.
Life-Changing Education is a two-year, university-wide exploration of how learning changes lives. The initiative brings Michigan's research strength and collaborative spirit to the shared work of learning — connecting classrooms, labs, studios and communities to strengthen education and opportunity.
