The U-M School of Social Work has created an opportunity for U-M undergraduate Community Action and Social Change Minor students to enter the MSW program. Upon graduation from the on-campus bachelor's program, you can continue your MSW degree in our online educational programs.

Program Requirements

  • Admission to the MSW program.
  • Complete 13 credits of MSW coursework (on-campus) with a grade of C- or above in your senior year, if admitted to the MSW program. A Student Success Meeting may be required if your GPA across the following courses is below 3.0: SW505, SW506, SW508, SW509 and your undergraduate research course that will count as the SW507 requirement.
  • Students will complete a 45 credit hour program including 14 credits of field instruction (900 clock hours). Field instruction must be completed in the United States, not including U.S. territories.
  • You may complete coursework in the Interpersonal Practice in Integrated Health, Mental Health, & Substance Abuse which prepares you to become a licensed clinical social worker, or Children, Youth and Families (formerly Welfare of Children & Families), which prepares you to support children, adolescents, and adults.
  • Students in the full-time online program must be available for primarily day/weekday courses, as well as fieldwork during regular day/weekday hours. Students in the part-time online program will have evening/weekend courses available, but must be available for fieldwork during regular day/weekday hours.
  • Students admitted to the MSW Program must complete all MSW degree requirements within four years of their first term of enrollment.

Apply

Interested students must be current undergraduate students at University of Michigan-Ann Arbor who will declare and complete the Community Action and Social Change Minor.

*Transfer students may be eligible to participate in the online MSW program.
U.S. Citizenship or U.S. Permanent Resident status required. Undocumented and DACAmented students must reside within the U.S.

Application Steps

  1. Declare the Community Action and Social Change (CASC) minor.
  2. Complete CASC minor requirements as a U-M undergraduate.
  3. Apply for admission to the Online MSW program during your Junior year.
  4. Complete 13 credits in the MSW program your Senior year.
  5. Complete your MSW degree in the online program (if admitted to the MSW program).

When to Apply

  • Declare the Community Action and Social Change & Social Work program by your junior year. You must declare a Major in your school or college prior to declaring the CASC Minor.
  • Apply to the Online MSW Program by February 1 of your junior year.

Financial Aid

For information please refer to the MSW Guide to Financial Aid. Students may apply for grants, scholarships, and other forms of financial aid for the semesters they are enrolled in master’s level online courses through the School of Social Work. There is no financial aid available from the School of Social Work until you enroll as a graduate student.
