This talk will provide an overview of the William Davidson Institute, and in particular, the Scaling Impact Initiative. The Scaling Impact Initiative focuses on accelerating the development of sustainable and scalable impact enterprises that generate a net positive impact for the base of the pyramid (BoP). The talk will highlight the SII's focus areas and some on-going research projects aimed at providing actionable tools and frameworks to enterprise leaders who wish to scale their organizations' poverty alleviation impacts while also achieving financial sustainability.

While social scientists, activist and policy makers alike agree that mass incarceration has had devastating consequences for individuals, families, and residents of low income communities, we are just beginning to talk about how to bring it to an end. The School of Social Work, in collaboration with Friends of Restorative Justice of Washtenaw County, Healing Communities of Washtenaw, the Episcopal Church of the Incarnation, and the Interfaith Council on Peace and Justice will host a talk on how to end mass incarceration, beginning right here in Michigan.

Participants:

Dennis Schrantz, Director of the Michigan Council on Crime and Delinquency, founding director of the Michigan Office of Community Corrections, and the architect of the Michigan Prisoner Re-entry Initiative will give an address on how to end mass incarceration in Michigan.

An expert panel will respond to this address. Panelists include: Mary King of the Michigan Council on Crime and Delinquency and formerly the Washtenaw County Prisoner Reentry Initiative; Hazelette Crosby Robinson, a proud alumni of the University of Michigan School of Social Work and Research Associate with the Detroit Reentry Project; and community activist Billy Wilder, who served 27 years in the Michigan Department of Corrections and now works on issues of prison reform and reentry.

Rev. Joe Summers (ECI) and Hazelette Crosby Robinson (UM SSW) will co-host the event.

Associate Professor H. Luke Shaefer will present his efforts to engage the policy community in drawing lessons from his new co-authored book, "2.00 a Day: Living on Almost Nothing in America."
