  1. “Searching for Sugar Man: The Role of Music During the Apartheid Era” Film Screening and Discussion

    November 13, 2014 - 5:30 PM to 8:00 PM ET

    “Searching for Sugar Man” is  a documentary focusing on artist Rodgriguez whose music served as an anthem for South Africans during the Apartheid Era. Although Rodriguez music did not gain fame in the U.S., he was an icon in South Africa. This movie brings light to the importance that music plays in political movements while informing viewers of the harsh conditions of South Africans after WWII.

  2. Private Practice Tips & Techniques for Social Workers - Day 2

    November 14, 2014 - 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM ET

    Day 2 of Private Practice Tips & Techniques for Social Workers will build on the content presented on Day 1. Participants will review their draft strategic plans & other progress since Day 1. Feedback/coaching will be provided by presenter as well as other course participants. In addition, options for marketing strategies supporting their strategic plan will be covered. Tips & techniques for becoming credentialed by insurance companies, operating under managed care & effective contracting with new clients will also be presented. Final coaching & creation of action plans will wrap up the Day 2 course.

  4. Curtis Center: Pizza & Pontification

    November 14, 2014 - 12:00 PM to 1:30 PM ET

    Join the Curtis Center for "Pizza & Pontification" -- a series of discussions, trainings and presentations on the second Friday of the month at 12 noon in the Curtis Center Conference Room.  Pizza and salad lunch available at 11:45 am.  All are welcome!

    November 14:  Jinyu Liu will discuss supportive systems and mental health of Chinese older adults. Dr. Liu is a Curtis Center postdoctoral fellow working closely with faculty mentor, Associate Professor Lydia Li.

  5. Lecture: Sports and Youth Development

    November 14, 2014 - 12:00 PM to 1:30 PM ET

    Tarkington Newman will present his research on "Sports and Youth Development". This event is part of this fall's LSA Theme Semester, Sports and the University. Food will be provided.

    Tarkington J. Newman (BS, Central Michigan University; MSW, University of Michigan) is a doctoral student in the College of Social Work and will also be earning as masters of science in Kinesiology. His research interest included sport-based positive youth development amongst at-risk adolescent urban male minorities, as well as the integration of social work practice within sport culture. More specifically, his focus is on the mechanisms of the youth sport leader (i.e. coach) in intentionally facilitating life skill development through the utilization of an experiential learning framework within the context of competitive athletics. He is currently a Graduate Enrichment Fellow and a Graduate Research Associate where services as the Teaching & Learning Coordinator of the LiFE Sports Initiative. Prior to joining OSU, Tarkington worked for two years as a school social work intern at the high school level utilizing adventure and experiential-based therapy as well as spending the last four years coaching competitive high school track & field.

  6. "Rape for Profit" Film Screening and Discussion

    The film description from the Web site reads: "Typically known for coffeehouses and cloud cover, Seattle has also gained another title: 3rd most prostituted children in the nation. Experts estimate that there are up to 300,000 underage girls sexually trafficked nationally every year. This feature-length documentary from Mew Films is the product of hundreds of hours of ridealong footage with Sea-Tac street crimes unit and the Seattle high-risk victims unit... This powerful film hopes to shed light on this growing problem and uncover the solution ...Rape for Profit partners with local law enforcement, teen shelters, and non-profit organizations to help educate the city of Seattle on what is going on right in front of them."

  9. Change it Up! Bystander Intervention Workshop

    November 18, 2014 - 5:00 PM to 6:30 PM ET

    This session will bring bystander intervention skills to students for the purpose of building inclusive and respectful communities. Through interaction theatre, participants get to practice intervening in real-life scenarios, giving them the opportunity to develop the confidence and skills necessary to "Change It Up" when harmful situations arise.

  10. Peace Corps Information Session

    If you're interested in service work, life abroad, foreign languages, a government career and applying the theory of your coursework to real world problems in health, education, the environment, agriculture, community development and entrepreneurship, consider international work with Peace Corps! Learn more about working abroad for Peace Corps and "the toughest job you'll ever love."
