  1. Adventure/Experiential-Based Therapy/ Infusing Intentional Actions into your Clinical Practice

    November 11, 2016 - 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM ET

    This workshop will focus on the use of adventure-based activities in therapy with individuals, groups and families. Participants will be introduced to an adventure approach through lectures, discussions and demonstrations. This workshop is designed to provide the participant with a theoretical, philosophical and experiential understanding of adventure and experiential learning and its application to therapy. Course content includes the theoretical and philosophical foundations of adventure based practice, a discourse on the safe and appropriate use of adventure activities with different client groups, a demonstration on facilitating adventure activities, and use of adventure activities in assessment and intervention.

  3. SSW Current Events Cafe SSW Current Events Cafe

    November 14, 2016 - 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM ET

    As a response to violence and social justice issues worldwide, the School of Social Work is hosting several Current Events Cafes. Cafes provide a reflective conversational space to process, (un)learn together, and move forward social justice work - micro, mezzo, and macro. To be responsive to current events, topics and resources will be announced via email a few days prior to each cafe.

    Join us at the Current Events Cafe on Monday, 11/14, 12-2pm, in room 2202 of the School of Education for a space to process, debrief, and discuss the election results.

    Professor Cristina Bares will facilitate hands-on reflective activities; such as origami, coloring, and journaling. You are also encouraged to bring a laptop or tablet as we will work together to create a list of local, national, and global actions.

    The Student Rights Project (SRP) in collaboration with SSW Reads invites students to join in on a discussion on advocacy and activism in Detroit. 
    Celebrate the legacy of Grace Lee Boggs through an interdisciplinary discussion on chapter four of The Next American Revolution "Detroit, Place and Space to Begin Anew". Receive a copy of chapter four upon RSVP. Food will be provided.

  9. Alumni Lunch Session: Social Policy & Evaluation Panel

    November 16, 2016 - 12:15 PM to 1:30 PM ET

    This lunch panel will focus on highlighting specific skills, adapting your resume, suggestions on how to search and get job listings, marking trends for this sector and information about data visualization. 

    On the panel:

    Sue Ann Savas: Clinical Assistant Professor of Social Work. Sue Ann received her MSW and BA in economics from the University of Michigan. For the past 20 years, Sue Ann practiced as a program evaluator. She specializes in the areas of program design, logic modeling, evaluation planning, implementation evaluations, outcome measurement, and reporting for continuous quality improvement. She uses an interdisciplinary approach, collaborating with providers from the fields of social work, public health, environmental health, and education.

    Sarah Beu: Evaluation Specialist. Sarah, MSW, leads several evaluation projects and coordinates professional and student trainings on evaluation skills. She gained evaluation experience at the U-M School of Social Curtis Center Program Evaluation Group. She also provided technical and evaluation consulting services to national grantees through the National Council for Behavioral Health, an organization based out of Washington D.C. Sarah's interest lie in participatory evaluation designs, data visualization best practices, and quantitative data analysis.
