  2. Advanced Standing Peer Consultation Group

    Calling all advanced standing students - The Office of Field Instruction will be hosting it's second Advanced Standing Peer Consultation Group! This group will give you the opportunity to discuss your field work and get valuable feedback, as well as spend some time with your fellow advanced standing peers. This is an open, drop-in group.

  3. 2014 Zora Neale Hurston Lecture

    November 5, 2014 - 5:30 PM to 7:00 PM ET

    Presenter: Ms. Alice Walker, author, activist & scholar

    The U-M Department of Afroamerican and African Studies and the Center for the Education of Women will bring Pulitzer Prize-winning novelist and activist, Alice Walker, to Hill Auditorium to deliver the 20th annual Zora Neale Hurston Lecture. As the 2014 guest lecturer, Ms. Walker will explore social justice issues from her unique womanist and black feminist perspective. Bringing scholarship and activism together, Ms. Walker will also reflect on the complementary missions of DAAS and CEW.

    This event is free and open to the public, but registration is requested.

  7. Lost in Translation: Stories of Global Experiences

  8. Trauma-Sensitive Social Work with Children and Families

    November 6, 2014 - 11:30 PM ET

    Recent data suggests that over approximately 2/3 of individuals are exposed to at least potentially traumatic event and that there are a wide range of impacts on functioning. The impact of trauma is vast and reaches far beyond just traumatic stress and may hold the link to some of the biggest health and economic problems we face today.

    This course will provide information about the impact of trauma and will outline best practices for creating a traum-informed practice. In a variety of settings (welfare, health, mental health, school), there are opportunities for promotive factors and interventions that will help traumatized youth ahd families adjust over time. We will consider how the evidence about effective prevention and intervention methods for trauma can be applied to a variety of social work settings.

  9. Social Work and Sports

    November 7, 2014 - 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM ET

    A growing body of research documents the positive health and mental health benefits of participating in organized sports. While much of the current research is focused on youth participation in sports, there is also evidence of how participation in sports can benefit people across the age range and from different ethic and socioeconomic groups. This 2 day mini-course will discuss how social work values, concepts, and interventions on both the micro and macro levels can enhance sport activities. Specific strategies such as, strength-based coaching, teambuilding, conflict resolution, family collaboration, diversity training, community engagement, advocacy, and policy development will be discussed. Model interdisciplinary programs that serve at-risk youth, older adults, and other special populations will be highlighted. Through discussion and group projects, students will apply social work competencies including, assessment, engagement, intervention, research, and evaluation to this emerging practice area.
