  1. Field Instructor Training Workshop

    October 3, 2014 - 8:00 AM to 3:30 PM ET

    A bi-annual workshop designed to train and update field instructors on field related curriculum.

    Program Agenda: Registration & Breakfast 8:00-8:15  Sign-In/Packets: McGregor Commons  Morning Session 8:15-10:00 Presentation: “What Makes a Safe Beginner?”
    The course is geared to engage field instructors in discussions, role plays, & share information regarding student field training. University/school requirements & expectations are discussed along with a session on "what makes a safe beginner" related to assessing student abilities about when & where students can begin to function more independently & with more complex cases/issues. 10:15-12:00 Small Group Sessions: “Building the Bridge Between Field and the SSW”
    Facilitated by Field Faculty in assigned break-out rooms.
      Lunch 12:00-12:45   Afternoon Session 12:45-1:45 Presentation:“Understanding and Applying the ADA in Field Instruction” 
    Participants will be able to access UM resources for students with disabilities and gain increased awareness of ADA guidelines to understand provisions of reasonable accommodations to ensure students with disabilities have the same opportunities as other students. 1:45-3:15 Presentation: "Affecting Change & Improving Outcomes: Utilizing Technology to Enhance Competency-based Learning in Field Instruction"
    The focus of this course is to prepare and equip the participants in utilizing technology to assist them in the development of educationally sound field-based assignments that help prepare our field students in becoming proficient with the required social work competencies.  Participants will learn how to access and use the online Educational Agreement which acts as the contract for field placement.

     

  2. MSW Prospective Student Session

    October 3, 2014 - 3:00 PM to 4:00 PM ET

    Attend this session to learn more about the University of Michigan School of Social Work's MSW Program. Topics covered will include: MSW Curriculum, Dual Degree Programs, Application Process, Financial Aid, and more.

  7. Detroit Clinical Scholars Information Meeting

    October 7, 2014 - 5:00 PM ET

    An information session will be held to discuss the new Detroit Clinical Scholar Program opportunity. This award provides us with funds to provide up to 33 stipends of $10,000 each to current 16 Month Interpersonal Practice MSW students who have an interest in engaging in clinical social work practice with racial and ethnic minority children, adolescents and transitional age youth who experience health and behavioral health problems and their families living in impoverished areas in the Detroit/Wayne County communities.

  8. JCLP Sukkot Open House

    October 8, 2014 - 11:00 AM to 12:30 PM ET

    Sukkot is a Jewish holiday about radical hospitality!

    Please join students, faculty, and staff of the University of Michigan Jewish Communal Leadership Program (JCLP) in the School of Social Work's sukkah (temporary booth) for snacks, crafts, and a place to connect with one another.  Help us build an inclusive community through interfaith and intercultural expression in the SSW courtyard. 

    (Note: backup weather location is School of Social Work McGregor Commons, at the entrance to the SSW building.)

  9. Professional Communication

    October 8, 2014 - 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM ET

    This session will provide a very quick overview of professional communication tasks, with a focus on public speaking, both with and without slides. If time permits, we will briefly consider principles of good slide design and poster design.

    An optional follow-up exercise will allow you to view and evaluate your own presentation style.

  10. Lunch & Learn: Therapeutic Responses to Working with LGBTQIA Older Adults

    October 8, 2014 - 1:30 PM to 3:30 PM ET

    The Queer Social Work Alliance, Sigma Phi Omega Gerontology Honor Society, and the Dean’s Initiative on Transgender, Bisexual, Lesbian, Gay, Questioning, Intersex and Ally Matters present: “Aging Across the Spectrum” with Shari Robinson-Lynk. This event, "Therapeutic Responses to Working with LGBTQ Older Adults" is free and open to the public and lunch is provided.
