Field Placement Info Session/Webinar
May 3, 2016 - 5:00pm to 6:00pm
This session will walk admitted students through the process of applying for a field placement. All students should plan to attend one of these sessions. Presenters will also discuss how to effectively utilize the Career Center in preparing field application materials. The last 30 minutes of the session will discuss specific information for students planning to apply for a school placement.
This is a web-based session and you may attend from any computer via an Internet connection.

Entrepreneurship and Social Work with Moses Lee

Moses Lee will be discussing how social workers can best use their degree and skills to be leaders in the entrepreneurial world. He will discuss necessary skills for entreprenuership and growing trends in this sector of social work. Lunch will be provided.
Moses is an experienced educator and entrepreneur who is passionate about working with students to discover and take action on their passions and interests. This passion led him to start Seelio, Inc, an educational service and technology company that partners with universities, including the University of Michigan and UM School of Social Work, to prepare students for their careers. In 2014, Seelio was acquired by Keypath Education, a global education company with offices in the US, Canada, UK, and Australia. Today Moses serves as Group President for the Career Preparation business at Keypath Education.
Moses is also a part-time faculty member at the University of Michigan School of Engineering where he teaches the entrepreneurship practicum and social entrepreneurship. Previously, he directed TechArb, the U of M student startup accelerator where he coached and mentored students across all disciplines. In 2007, Moses helped start globalens.com (now WDI Publishing), an e-commerce website for business school case studies, and also started the social venture fund, Rain Capital. -
Culturally-responsive Practice in African American Communities: Prevention and Intervention Strategies with Racial Microaggressions

Distrust based on a history of unsatisfactory experiences with human service professionals and low retention in, and premature termination of services can reduce successful outcomes for members of African American communities. Participants in this course will examine racial microaggressions in practice as a source of these outcomes. Participants will define and identify racial microaggressions and their impact on clients and on the professional relationship. Attention will be given to the cultural context in the way racial microaggressions are experienced and dilemmas about how to respond. The effect of power differentials on the interpretation of racial microaggressions will be examined. Using an African-centered perspective, the course will be knowledge-, skills-, and values-based and will include assigned readings, power point presentations, video-clips, case studies, and small-group problem-solving. Building Layers of Support with LGBTQIAP2S Youth and Families

LGBT youth continue to be disproportionately represented in the child welfare system and face population-specific barriers during pivotal developmental stages in adolescence. As participants reflect on professional readiness to serve LGBT youth and their families, this workshop will provide support through a didactic overview of recent research and practice methods, laws, policies, and social influences that create both opportunities and barriers to culturally and linguistically competent service provision. This workshop will utilize universal terminology to define sex and gender and support participants on how to have discussions with LGBT youth that are experiencing biopsychosocial-spiritual stressors. Participants will receive skill-based knowledge on how to competently interact with LGBT youth and families, as well as tools to advocate for health and safety for this population in a variety of settings.
