  1. Interpersonal Psychotherapy for Mood Disorders

    April 1, 2016 - 9:00am to 4:30pm

    The focus of this course is on the concepts, theory, principles and practice to the assessment and interpersonal psychotherapy of adults and adolescents with mood disorders. The course content reflects advanced material of current relevance for effective and evidence-based clinical social work practice. Specifically, this mini-course will provide updated training in the Interpersonal Psychotherapy treatment of mood disorders. This course will review diagnostic criteria and assessment, but will mainly focus on clinical skills and will be an interactive seminar type class.

  2. Careers in Aging - Working with Older Adults Lunch & Learn with Erica Solway

    April 5, 2016 - 12:00pm to 2:00pm

    You are invited to join the Geriatric Learning Community and Sigma Phi Omega (geriatric honor society) at the SSW to learn more about our aging world. Engage with professionals as they discuss their interdisciplinary approaches to working with older adults. Join us to learn about the ever increasing need for social workers, healthcare professionals and clinicians trained in gerontology. Featured special guest is Erica Solway, who worked as a policy advisor to Bernie Sanders in Washington D.C. Lunch will be provided.

  4. Understanding Licensure

    April 6, 2016 - 12:00pm to 1:30pm

    Michelle Woods, Director of Career Services, will discuss the general rules for social work licensure and discuss what exams are utilized during the licensure process. Participants will learn about the licensure rules for Mi and other key states.

    Participants are encouraged to bring their laptop or tablet to the workshop.

  5. MSW Welcome Dinner, for incoming CASC Students

    April 6, 2016 - 5:00pm to 6:30pm

    Join us for a special reception for CASC students entering the MSW program. This is a great opportunity for incoming students to learn from second year students in the program, and for second year students to share their wisdom and lessons learned with new students. It's also a great chance to get to know other CASC alums in the MSW program. As always, there will be free food! RSVP to cascminor@umich.edu.

  6. Environmental Racism Conversation

    April 6, 2016 - 6:00pm to 7:30pm

    Join the CASC Student Board, The Center for Engaged Academic Learning, The Ginsberg Center, and Chi Upsilon Sigma National Latin Sorority, Inc. as we host a conversation on environmental justice, with a focus on the Flint water crisis. The evening will give an overview of environmental racism and the Flint water crisis, and include break out group conversations about the role of student activism in this crisis.

  7. Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy and Exposure and Response Prevention for Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) and OCD Related Disorders

    April 8, 2016 - 9:00am to 5:00pm

    This is a practical application mini-course focusing on the exposure and response prevention treatment of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. Also,in the treatment of panic disorder, behavioral exposure therapy for internal and external panic cues, and cognitive restructuring. Cognitive-behavioral assessment methods will be infused throughout the course. The course will also include demonstrations and role-plays, session video tapes and interactive classroom instruction.

  8. Understanding Emotional and Mental Health Concerns of Youth in the Child Welfare System: Assessment Tools and Evidence-Informed Interventions

    April 8, 2016 - 9:00am to 12:15pm

    This training will examine practice theories and strategies for working directly with diverse groups of children, adolescents living with emotional or behavioral challenges, and their caretakers. This training will emphasize evidence-informed assessment strategies and interventions that address children or adolescents within their social contexts (e.g., peer group, school, family, neighborhood). The interaction between environmental risk factors, protective factors, promotive and developmental factors as they contribute to coping, resiliency, and disorder will also be addressed. This training will utilize role playing, small and large group discussions, and visual displays.

  10. Poverty Workshop- Poverty and mental health: Untangling the causation-selection issue

    April 8, 2016 - 12:00pm to 1:30pm

    During this talk, Prof. Marilyn Sinkewicz, Assistant Professor of Social Work, will discuss findings from her current paper, which explores two different theories, with very different policy implications, that have emerged to explain the reciprocal and reinforcing relation between psychopathology and socioeconomic status: social causation (poverty leads to mental illness) and social selection (mental illness leads to poverty). The study she will discuss uses nationally representative longitudinal data to examine causation and selection processes and their relative predictive value over the adult life course.
