  4. Working with Couples in Therapy

    January 8, 2015 - 5:00pm to 8:00pm

    This mini-course is designed to familiarize students with the current theories of couple therapy. Selected empirically supported models utilized in couple therapy will be examined The course also looks at some of the key issues and challenges faced by therapists who provide couple therapy. This mini-course will be skill based and focus on helping students to learn effective approaches to working with couples in therapy.

  6. Geographic Information Systems (GIS) for Social Workers

    January 9, 2015 - 9:00am to 5:00pm

    The goal of the GIS course is to provide a general introduction to the use of GIS software for social work practice. Students will learn the basics of practical mapping of data and information using a range of GIS software. Student will learn the basic strategies of securing data, securing map images, and integration of maps and data to create single and multi-layered data maps. Students will be presented with real time applications of this mapped information in clinical and community practice.

  7. Curtis Center: Pizza & Pontification

    Join the Curtis Center for "Pizza & Pontification" -- a series of discussions, trainings and presentations on the second Friday of the month at 12 noon in the Curtis Center Conference Room.  Pizza and salad lunch available at 11:45 am.  All are welcome!

    January 9:  Elizabeth Thomason, PhD, University of Michigan, is a post-doctoral fellow with the Curtis Center working with the program evaluation group.  Her research interests include maternal mental health and family well-being during the early childhood years.  Her dissertation examined the relations between maternal cognitions and maternal depressive symptoms during the perinatal period.  Through examination of individual-level and socio-contextual factors, Elizabeth will talk about her work which seeks to contribute to prevention and intervention programs aimed at improving maternal mental health and child outcomes.

  9. Concepts of Leadership and Management in Community Benefit Organizations

    January 10, 2015 - 9:00am to 5:00pm

    Generally speaking, "management" is getting work done through others" Leadership is creating and sustaining change without crisis. This minicourse explores these concepts in the context of community benefit organizations[CBOs](aka, nonprofits) . While CBOs are organizations, and thus share a lot of features with other kinds of organisations (corporate, governmental) they have many elements of unique structure and stricture. They tend to work with "wicked problems"; they have a different governance structure from corporate and governmental organizations; they have a strong sense of mission and purpose, which is highly motivating but also can lead to under-investment in infrastructure both hardware (physical plant, etc) and software (employee training and development)...

  10. Advanced Field Peer Consultation Group

    January 12, 2015 - 12:00pm to 2:00pm

    The Peer Consultation Group offers a seminar-like experience where students can come to consult each other with field-related issues/support. The groups are open and drop-in. You can come to as many or as little as you like.
