Understanding decisions to participate in cancer clinical trials and supportive care services among BIPOC and SGM adolescent and young adult cancer survivors

This project builds on two ongoing studies led by School of Social Work faculty members and utilizes qualitative findings and stakeholder feedback from two currently funded studies to inform the development and interpretation of a quantitative survey to be administered as part of this pilot study. For this proposed quantitative investigation, we aim to better understand factors associated with participation in clinical trials and supportive care services among intersecting racial minority (Black, Indigenous, and Persons of Color [BIPOC] and/or sexual and gender minority [SGM]) adolescent and young adult (AYA) cancer survivors’. We propose to evaluate the extent to which demographic and clinical factors, factors related to minority stress theory, and social safety, are associated with participation in supportive care services and clinical trials. Specific items and measures to be used in the proposed survey will be informed by qualitative findings from Dr. Zhang’s PCORI-funded study involving qualitative interviews
