First visiting executive/practitioner, Tony Rothschild

10-30-09
Anthony "Tony" Rothschild, MSW '72, is the School's first visiting executive/practitioner. This fall he is teaching SW 560, Introduction to Community Organization, Management, and Policy/Evaluation Practice, and in the winter semester he will teach SW 674, Community-Based Policy Advocacy.

Tony is available to share his community experience with students and faculty. You may contact him at tonyroth@umich.edu.

Tony is CEO at Common Ground, an Oakland County-based nonprofit that provides crisis intervention services. He was selected to be a Eugene A. Miller Fellow by the McGregor Fund.

From a Common Ground news release:
As a part of his grant application, Rothschild designed a sabbatical that while removing him from day-to-day operations at Common Ground, will allow him to pursue activities that will contribute to his skills, knowledge and commitment to the nonprofit arena. His sabbatical will entail both study and teaching in the field of nonprofit board governance, as well as learning more about international best practices in mental health and helping to build the capacity of Washington, D.C.-based mental health advocacy group, the National Council for Community Behavioral Healthcare. He also plans on taking a four-week immersion courses in the Spanish language at a school in Quetzaltenango, Guatemala. He is currently on campus two days a week, serving as a "CEO in Residence" at the University of Michigan's School of Social Work; teaching classes during the fall and winter semesters two days a week, studying Board Governance and serving as a resource by sharing his community experience with students and faculty. He will also be attending a one-week residential program at Harvard University, where he will be learning more about board governance from William Ryan, co-author of Governance as Leadership.

"It is my personal goal to help Common Ground successfully become a model of high-impact governance--not only in metro Detroit, but on a national scale. I am eager to make the time to study and put into practice some of the innovative concepts being developed on board governance, which I believe will result in the type of leadership required to take on the challenges we are faced with today. As I approach my 20th anniversary at Common Ground, I cannot think of a better way to celebrate than to participate in the Eugene A. Miller Fellows program."

The Eugene A. Miller Fellows Program recognizes and encourages excellence in the leadership of an agency by providing support for a sabbatical for the agency's president, executive director or founder. The program awards up to three grants annually of up to $50,000 each to selected human services agencies, chosen from among recent McGregor Fund grantees with chief executives of long standing. In addition to providing financial support for sabbatical expenses, grants made under the Miller Fellows Program may also be used to support direct costs incurred by the agencies while their executives are on leave.
