  3. Improving Patient-Provider Communication: Insights for Social Work

    March 3, 2017 - 8:00am to 12:00pm

    This course is designed to introduce social workers to the dynamics of patient provider communication and its importance in improving health care outcomes with a particular emphasis on African American patient experiences. Attendees will learn about the models of communication that provide the highest quality of care, what patients really perceive when facing specific clinician verbal and non-verbal behaviors, and the short and long-term physical and mental health outcomes associated with varying levels of patient-provider communication. The communicative role of social work on health care teams will be discussed as well as strategies for advocating for patients with limited communication skills or few companions and caregivers present to augment patient-provider interactions. Specific research conducted by the instructor on African American men's health communication will be presented in the context of lessons learned about patient and provider communication patterns in the context of cancer care...

  6. Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Student Forum

    March 7, 2017 - 5:00pm to 6:30pm

    Join the School of Social Work's Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion to discuss the School of Social Work's DEI Strategic Plan. Learn more about the history of the DEI plan, what is currently being done, and have an opportunity to provide feedback on the plan moving forward. Food will be provided.

  7. Professional Development after the MSW Program- Career Advancement & Michigan Licensure

    March 8, 2017 - 12:00pm to 2:00pm

    Are you a graduating social work student wanting to get a job? Do I need a license if I am a going into macro social work? How much should I get paid?

    NASW-Michigan Director of Member Services Duane Breijak, LMSW will walk you through some of the immediate obstacles you may face when entering the profession. This workshop will provide an overview of the licensure process in Michigan, supervision requirements, the ASWB exam, as well as give new professional tools for salary negotiation and career advancement.

    Join the Office of Student Services and the Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion for an informal Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) related drop in lunch session. This will be a space for building community, as well as an opportunity to talk about any DEI questions, concerns, or ways that you would like to contribute to DEI efforts.

    Research Day is scheduled during the doctoral student recruitment weekend. Candidates for the U-M SSW Joint PhD Program will attend the keynote, poster session, and strolling lunch.
