  1. Understanding Assessment, Foster Care and Adoption with American Indian/Alaska Native Children and their Families (Part 1 and Part 2)

    November 3, 2014 - 9:00am to 12:15pm

    This course is designed as 2 three hour trainings, geared towards social workers that are involved with the assessment and placement of children in out-of-home care, and who are looking for a deeper understanding of the Indian Child Welfare Act (ICWA). This course will also cover cultural factors to consider when working with AI/AN families. Participants will expand their understanding of ICWA and gain confidence in meeting the needs of AI/AN children and families, while remaining in-compliance with the Law. The social workers role will be explored in accordance to the NASW Code of Ethics. Participants will learn to identify community resources available to American Indian/Alaska Native children and their families involved in the child welfare system.

    Alumnnus Jonathan Stern will talk about his work at Pioneer High School and his experience as an MSW in the Children & Youth field.

    This event may be of special interest to Children & Youth students and others interested in school social work.

  6. How to spot and prevent identity theft, phone scams and mail scams How to spot and prevent identity theft, phone scams and mail scams

    November 3, 2014 - 6:30pm to 8:00pm

    Sigma Phi Omega (SPO), the academic honor and professional society for students interested in gerontology, is hosting a representative from Senior Brigade, a program sponsored by the Attorney General’s Office.  The representative will be at the SSW for a presentation on how to spot and prevent identity theft, phone scams, and mail scams. This topic applies not only to those of social working with older adults, but to all social workers. Please join the SPO students for this 90 minute presentation.  Snacks will be provided.
