Annual Health Sciences MLK Day Lecture: “Healing the Divide: Bridges to Community Health”

Phyllis Meadows, PhD, MSN, RN, serves as Associate Dean for Practice at the University of Michigan School of Public Health, focusing her efforts on developing a comprehensive strategy for the School to improve the public health workforce and establish the academic health department model. Her interest and involvement in organizing community based approaches for outreach, health education and early screening and care spans over 25 years. As a faculty member of the Department of Health Management and Policy, she develops and teaches courses in public health administration and public health policy. As a Senior Fellow – Health for the Kresge Foundation, Dr. Meadows is implementing a national initiative to expand the role of community health centers in addressing inequities in population health. Dr. Meadows served as the Director of Public Health and Health Officer for the City of Detroit. She lends her expertise in nursing, public health and philanthropy with numerous appointments to local, state, and national Boards and Advisory Committees. These include the State of Michigan Department of Public Health Board of Directors, Robert Wood Johnson Foundation’s Partners in Nursing Initiative, the Executive Nurse Fellows National Advisory Committee, and the Jonas Fund – Center for Nursing Excellence in New York.

Grief and the Healing Process: A Panel Discussion from Personal Experience

Phillip Sample and Billy Wilder, two formerly incarcerated individuals, grieve over the crimes they committed. Tammi Smith and Gary Weinstein, who have both lost family members to violent crimes, have each reached out to the perpetrators as part of their healing process. These views on grief, and more, will be discussed in this panel, presented by the Prison Creative Arts Project (PCAP) and co-sponsored by the Community Action and Social Change (CASC) minor. The six panelists will speak and then lead a discussion on this difficult, painful, and very complicated subject. Please join us in the Pendleton Room of the Michigan Union from 1pm-3pm to explore this topic.

Healing One Story at a Time: Digital Storytelling and Indigenous Intersectionality

Storytelling is revered within the oral tradition that continues to thrive in Native American communities. The best stories provide profound navigational maps that enter our consciousness and guide us throughout our lives.
This event will highlight one innovative storytelling approach – digital storytelling – its use in Indian Country, and the ways it celebrates resiliency as well as the wide range of intersecting identities among today’s Native Americans. A panel of Native American professors, students, and community leaders will discuss the impact of traditional storytelling in Indian Country and how storytelling has shaped their own lives.
