Course Type: Mini-course
Course Description: A growing body of research documents the importance of the relationship between humans and animals, ranging from significance of companion animals and the need for social support for bereaved pet owners to the relationship between animal abuse and child abuse, domestic violence, and elder abuse. In addition, the therapeutic benefits of animals are well-established, and pet-facilitated therapy is highly consistent with classic social work approaches to problem-solving and promoting optimal adjustment between the client and his/her environment. We propose a two-day mini-course that will address the social work practice implications of the complex bond between humans and other animals. Topics covered will include 1) an overview of the relationship between humans and animals and why related knowledge, attitudes, and skills are important for social workers; 2) animals as pets and their health and mental health benefits over the life course; 3) pet-facilitated psychotherapy and the use of service animals; 4) animal abuse and its relationship to domestic violence; and 5) ethical issues and controversies, including animal rights, animals and research, vegetarianism, and social work and speciesism. Since this is a mini-course, it is not possible to cover each of these topics in detail. Thus, we will provide an overview of each topic, including suggested readings and resources. However, the proposed mini-course will focus primarily on those topics with immediate relevance to social work practice: animals as pets and their role in human well-being, including issues related to the loss of a companion animal; the use of animal-assisted therapy, service animals, and other animal-assisted interventions; and the assessment and treatment of animal abusers.

Course Type: Workshop
Course Description: Over the next decade, a leadership gap is predicted in the nonprofit sector. By 2016, it is estimated that these organizations will need to recruit and develop almost 80,000 new high-level managers each year. While social workers can be highly effective leaders (e.g., managers, directors, administrators) of nonprofit organizations, many overlook these opportunities since the majority of their training and experience has been providing direct services. Those who do transition often have important skill or knowledge deficits that limit their success. Based on recommendations from the Nonprofit Leadership Alliance, this highly interactive workshop will provide professionals with an understanding of the core skills needed to transition into leadership positions. This course is appropriate for professionals who have recently been promoted into management roles, or who are interested in making this transition.

Course Description: In our current environment of doing more with less, public resources are decreasing, therefore grant funds are becoming more competitive and difficult to secure. Seeking funds can be daunting. Based on best practices in grantseeking, this interactive course will set professionals on a path to becoming proficient in seeking funds from new sources, primarily philanthropic foundations, corporate giving programs and grantmaking public charities. This course is appropriate for professionals whose responsibilities include securing financial resources as well as those interested in developing their expertise in this area.
