2:00 - 4:00 p.m. - CEU Workshop: New Poverty in the United States: Implications for Social Work
Presenter: Dean Laura Lein, PhD

This course will provide a qualitative picture of the meaning and experience of poverty in the United States over the last three decades from the perspective of the lived experience. It will explore such topics as the welfare experience, life on a minimum wage job, the changing nature of United States employment, services for families that are unaffordable on a modest income (child care, medical care, urban housing), and the increasing prevalence of extreme poverty in the United States. In each of these areas we will explore: (1) the implications for the individual and family in both a community and policy context and (2) the implications for social work practitioners working with impoverished clients.
