Laura Brown

Prior to my arrival at the School of Social Work, my primary volunteer actions included participating in food banks, phone banks for political candidates and park clean-ups — none of which were very personal. Now that I have seen the research and watched students prepare for a very difficult career, I am considering volunteer roles that might be more personal. I am training for a program called Pairs with Pride. They create one-on-one, intergenerational connections between LGBTQ+ older adults and students. It is not counseling: it is just being present and participating, but the influence of this community has inspired me to put more of myself into my volunteering. I was proud to mention my role as administrative staff on my application.
