Over the past 15 months, Connie Sung and I have co-led the INITIATE Center, a bold, multidisciplinary initiative in disability justice. Our team, which includes seven U-M units, five universities, and over 50 community partners, addresses the critical issue of unemployment among autistic individuals — over two million are jobless, despite 85% wanting to work. The INITIATE Center aims to improve employment outcomes by: 1) launching innovative implementation strategies and AI tools to enhance evidence-based employment services; and 2) creating a workforce training hub to reduce the 45% annual turnover among employment service staff, equipping them with skills to effectively use AI, thereby improving service quality and empowering both providers and autistic jobseekers.
