Description
The School of Social Work Office of Global Activities and U-M Spectrum Center are collaborating to host Trans Visibility Passport Day. During this event, the Washtenaw County Clerk's office will assist students and community members to apply for, renew, or make changes to their passport in the form of a name change* or updated gender marker.** Although this event is hosted specifically for folks needing a gender marker or name change, individuals not requiring these services but still in need of a new or renewed passport are welcome to attend.
*Please note that one must have already gone through the legal name change process and must be able to provide the original court documentation regarding the name change.
**Applicants can self-select the binary gender they want printed on their U.S. passport by simply checking "M" or "F" on the application (an "X" gender marker for non-binary, intersex, and/or gender non-conforming persons is not yet available for U.S. passports). You no longer need to provide medical certification or a physician's letter when applying for a U.S. passport in a gender that does not match the gender on your citizenship evidence or photo ID.
The cost of a passport is:
- Regular Passport Book: $110
- Expedited Passport Book: $170
- Name change or gender marker update: Use this fee calculator to determine the cost
- A passport card is an additional $30
- There is a separate processing fee of $35 applicable to all passport applications
Please be aware that all payments must be made on the day of the event. Payments for the passport book or card must be payable to the U.S. Department of State. Payments for the processing fee must be payable to Washtenaw County Clerk. All payments MUST be a check or a money order. Counter checks, credit cards, and cash will not be accepted. Financial support may be available for students applying for a passport who are requesting name or gender maker change. Please send a message to [email protected] to request more information.
Please see this web page for maps of the SSW/University of Michigan and information on parking.
