MSW Student Guide

Section 1.19.01: Transfer Credit Policy for Field Education

A student may transfer up to four (4) credits of advanced field education and two (2) credits of foundation field education to cover field education requirements. Additional field education credits may be eligible for transfer to the University of Michigan as elective credit.

Foundation field education credits transferred to the University of Michigan cannot exceed the credits earned at another institution for foundation field education. If a student has earned more than two (2) credit hours for foundation field education, no credit may be awarded toward advanced field education, regardless of the number of clock hours completed, if the transferred credit is identified as foundation field education.

Field education credits to be transferred to the University of Michigan as advanced field education must be designated as advanced field education by the other institution to receive advanced field education credit. All students must complete a minimum of eight (8) credits of advanced field education at the University of Michigan.

Field education credit will be eligible for possible transfer within the following guidelines regardless of the number of clock hours required of the specific program/school:

Students completing one term of foundation field education may transfer the credits to cover a maximum of 2 credits of SW 515 regardless of the number of credits given by their previous institution. If a student completed a second term of foundation field education, they may transfer in up to four credits to cover elective requirements.

A student with designated advanced field education credits, in addition to foundation field education credits, may receive two (2) foundation field education credits, advanced field education credit not to exceed four (4) advanced field education credits (per established policy), and possibly additional elective credit (if at least two terms of field were completed).

Applicants to the MSW program should review the MSW Program Transfer Applicants page (
https://ssw.umich.edu/programs/msw/apply/transfer-applicants ) and submit the “Review My Courses” form (https://ssw.umich.edu/assets/transfer-applicant-credits/index.php?page=applicant-form ) at or prior to the time of application. Potential transfer credits will be reviewed by the MSW Program Director and students will be notified before registering for the first term how the potential transfer credits would count in the MSW program.
