Description
The School of Social Work Office of Global Activities, U-M Spectrum Center, and U-M Center for Global and Intercultural Study are collaborating to host Trans Passport Day. During this event, the Washtenaw County Clerk's office will assist students and community members to apply for, renew, or make changes to their passport in the form of a name change* or updated gender marker.** Although this event is hosted specifically for folks needing a gender marker or name change, individuals not requiring these services but still in need of a new or renewed passport are welcome to attend.
*If your name change has occured in the past 5 years, you must have already gone through the legal name change process and must be able to provide the original court documentation regarding the name change. If you have already been using your name exclusively and publicly for more than 5 years, you are eligible to complete your passport name change without legal documentation by providing a notarized affidavit of name change via Form DS-60 and submitting additional identification documents.
**Applicants can self-select the gender marker they want printed on their U.S. passport by simply checking "X," "F," or "M" on the application. You do not need to provide medical certification or a physician's letter when applying for a U.S. passport with a gender that does not match the gender on your citizenship evidence or photo ID.
The required fees are as follows:
- Application fee for a Passport Book (initial or renewal): $130
- Acceptance Fee for first-time applicants: $35
- Name change or gender marker update: Use this fee calculator to determine the cost
- Application fee for a Passport Card (for travel to Canada, Mexico, Bermuda, and the Caribbean only): $30
Please be aware that all payments must be made on the day of the event. Payments for the passport book or card must be payable to the U.S. Department of State. Payments for the processing fee must be payable to Washtenaw County Clerk. All payments MUST be a check or a money order. Counter checks, credit cards, and cash will not be accepted. Financial support may be available for students applying for a passport who are requesting name or gender maker change. Please send a message to [email protected] to request more information.
