Faculty Funding for Global Projects

The University of Michigan provides generous support to faculty who wish to explore activities and research that relate to global issues or make a contribution to internationalizing the educational environment for students through international programs and teaching abroad. Below is a list of globally related funding that is open to faculty.

October Deadlines

  1. OGA Travel Grant for Faculty Global Research and Collaborations

    Deadline: mid-October or early March

    Each year the Office of Global Activities (OGA) awards funds to support governing faculty global initiatives in research and teaching/professional collaborations.

February Deadlines

  1. CGIS Faculty-Led Programs

    Deadline: mid-February

    CGIS works closely with U-M faculty members to conceptualize, design, and implement study abroad programs. We offer a range of opportunities to teach abroad on short-term programs during the spring & summer.

  2. GIEU Programs

    Deadline: Status of grant availability for AY 2022-2023 unknown

    Calls for proposals generally go out in December.

  3. Global Course Connections (GCC)

    Deadline: mid-February

    GCC programs are 3-4 week-long extensions of courses taught on campus during winter term. If your proposal is accepted, the Center for Global and Intercultural Study provides support on various fronts such as making logistical arrangements (housing, classroom rental, excursions), helping coordinate responses to medical situations, and more.

March Deadlines

  1. African Heritage and Humanities Initiative for U-M Faculty

    Deadline: mid-March

    The African Heritage and Humanities Initiative is making funds available to support collaborative research projects being undertaken by co-PIs at the University of Michigan and an African institution of higher learning and/or knowledge production. These grants are intended to support scholarship produced by U-M’s faculty in the arts, humanities and interpretive social sciences whose work illuminates the dynamic, contested process by which African cultures and histories are made.

  2. Center for Global Health Equity Impact Accelerator Grants

    Deadline: mid-March

    CGHE Impact Accelerator Grants support projects that mobilize novel ideas and collaborations to help people live healthier and longer lives. This grant program supports co-designed projects that have been developed with a global partner. Preference will be given to proposals that pursue action-oriented projects focused on designing, piloting, or testing solutions that improve health outcomes for people in low- and middle-income countries contexts (that is, moving beyond conceptualizing problems or defining/studying research questions).

  3. Center for Global Health Equity Seed Grants

    Deadline: mid-March

    CGHE Seed Grants support exploratory projects that catalyze novel ideas and collaborations and build a case for larger-scale or more expansive projects that will help people live healthier and longer lives. This grant program supports co-designed projects that will be implemented with a global partner. Preference will be given to projects that build an evidence base for impact, design and test solutions, or pilot interventions. Other examples of funded projects may include - but are not limited to - exploring local needs, defining scope of work, validating feasibility of activities, and testing initial ideas.

    Deadline: early March

    The Center for Southeast Asian Studies offers modest funding opportunities to faculty who work on Thailand. Faculty funding programs include research grants, course development grants, conference travel grants, and research collaboration grants.

April Deadlines

  1. Faculty Grants: Weiser Faculty Grants

    Deadline: mid-October and early April

    The Weiser Center for Emerging Democracies (WCED) seeks proposals for faculty-led research projects that address themes related to authoritarianism and democracy, broadly understood. All Michigan faculty are eligible to apply. The grants support both individual and collaborative faculty research. Proposals may include travel to research sites, bringing international collaborators to the University of Michigan, initiating conferences and workshops (such as hosting a workshop to receive peer feedback on an advanced book project), or travel to devise research partnerships with academic institutions or NGOs. Funds may also be requested for pilot projects or to supplement existing projects.
