Peace Corps Paul D. Coverdell Fellows Program

The University of Michigan School of Social Work (U-M SSW) in conjunction with the Peace Corps is pleased to announce the availability of a Coverdell Fellows Program. The Coverdell Fellows Program provides Returned Peace Corps Volunteers the opportunity to earn a Master in Social Work at the University of Michigan.

For Fall 2021-22 qualified incoming Returned Peace Corps Volunteers* U-M have three opportunities to apply to the Coverdell Fellows Program: 1) Community-Based Initiative (CBI) - Coverdell Scholar, 2) Detroit Integrated Health (DIH) - Coverdell Scholar, and 3) Coverdell Fellows Scholarship. Those eligible are welcome to apply to any or all of these opportunities.

  • All Returned Peace Corp Volunteers who meet the eligibility requirements are invited to apply.
  • Application deadlines: December 1, 2020 (early application), February 1, 2021 (priority), March 1, 2021. Selection of applicants will be made from all dates with priority given to those applicants that meet the December and February deadlines.
  • If you would like to apply to the Coverdell Fellows Program and are applying to Community-Based Initiative in Detroit (CBI) and/or Detroit Integrated Health Scholars (DIH), then please answer "yes" to the question, "Do you plan to apply to an SSW Special Program?" found on the Financial Assistance page of the MSW online application and select the CBI and/or DIH checkbox(es). The CBI and/or DIH application pages will be added to the end of your online MSW application.
  • On the special program application page check "I am a returning Peace Corps Volunteer and am applying to the Coverdell Fellows Program." Returning Peace Corps Volunteers applying to the CBI- or DIH- Coverdell Fellows Program are eligible for an application fee waiver. You will need to upload your Description of Service to the appropriate DOS upload area. If you do not have a DOS because you are currently serving in the Peace Corps, please ask your country director or program manager for a brief letter verifying your status as a Peace Corps Volunteer. This letter may be uploaded in place of the DOS.
  • RPCVs applying to the Coverdell Fellows Scholarship are eligible for an MSW application fee waiver. If you are not applying to CBI or DIH, but are applying for the Coverdell Fellows Scholarship, please answer "Yes" to the question asking whether or not you have received an application fee waiver on page 1 - Getting Started of the application. Then you need to upload your Description of Service to the Fee Waiver Upload page. If you do not have a DOS because you are currently serving in the Peace Corps, please ask your country director or program manager for a brief letter verifying your status as a Peace Corps Volunteer. This letter may be uploaded in place of the DOS.
  • If you would like to apply for the Coverdell Fellows Scholarship, please submit the Coverdell Fellows Scholarship application via email to ssw.finaid.requests@umich.edu after you have submitted your MSW application.
