Like many states across the country, COVID-19 cases and deaths impact communities of color in Michigan at disproportionate rates. A staggering reality is that African Americans represent 13.6% of Michigan’s population, and they represent 40% of the deaths from COVID-19. The City of Detroit has a quarter of all COVID-19 cases and a quarter of deaths. Half of the cases and deaths in Michigan occurred in Wayne County, where Detroit is located. Other Counties in the lower half of Michigan have similar disparities including Genesee, Washtenaw, and Wayne.
