Parenting from the Margins: Highlighting the Role of Racial Discrimination and Coping Strategies in Harsh Parenting Among African American Mothers and Fathers of Young Children

The present study will examine whether coping styles might function as the mechanisms by which African American parents’ racial discrimination experiences are related to harsher parenting practices. Potential implications of the proposed study include specific recommendations for early childhood parenting programs and interventions that are predicated on and specific to the experiences of African American parents. In this regard, researchers and practitioners can further aid in fostering family environments that can best support African American youth’s wellbeing.
