MIP: Implementation of technology-assisted psychotherapy in non-skilled home care

October 2019 - September 2020

This project aims to develop and evaluate a personal care aide-supported, internet-based cognitive behavioral therapy program for at-home seniors. Researchers will test a new way of delivering mental health services in a non-traditional setting that is accessible to at-home seniors and potentially cost-effective. This project will harness the power of personal care aides, caregivers who provide personal care and companionship to many at-home seniors, by providing training and empowering them to facilitate the completion of a psychotherapy program among at-home seniors. The activities proposed in this project will help achieve our long-term goal of improving mental health services access and outcomes of homebound seniors in Michigan, many of whom are Medicaid consumers or Medicaid eligible. It addresses several critical barriers to mental health services identified in the most recent MI Mental Health Commission report, including barriers to accessing care, a shortage of trained providers, and lack of coordination of services
