Position Summary
- The crisis counselor conducts initial screenings and assessments for incoming clients at the MSU Sexual Assault Program.
- Provides individual short-term crisis counseling services to adult survivors and cosurvivors of sexual assault as well as adults sexually abused as children.
- Co-facilitates support groups and/ or self-care workshops for survivors of sexual violence.
- Coordinates referrals and bridging of students to mental health services in the community when necessary.
- Follows up and tracks referrals to ensure quality of care according to the individual client’s needs.
- Maintains a database of referral resources and community services in surrounding communities.
- Coordinates referrals on- and off-campus and facilitates communicate between the Sexual Assault Program, CAPS staff and other healthcare providers.
- Manages the incoming referrals and provides short term crisis counseling to survivors waiting for therapy services as necessary.
- Provides support to volunteers signed up for medical advocacy and hotline shifts. Provides hotline and in-person crisis intervention and medical advocacy.
- Facilitates training and outreach events regarding topics such as: sexual assault dynamics, rape culture, and trauma.
- Assists survivors with completing Michigan Crime Victims Compensation applications.
- Assists in facilitating training for new Sexual Assault Crisis Intervention (SACI) volunteers once per semester.
- This position requires the ability to provide in-person crisis intervention and advocacy services at Sparrow Hospital Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner Unit within a 20-minute travel time period as needed.
- Unit Specific Education/Experience/Skills Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing one or two years of graduate study beyond a Bachelor's degree, such as a Masters in Social Work; one to three years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in counseling in a health/mental health environment; or an equivalent combination of education and experience; and State certification as a Social Worker.
