MSW Student Guide

Section 1.10.01: Switching Between the On-Campus and/or Online MSW Programs

Online students are admitted to the online MSW program and on-campus students to the on-campus MSW program. Students may request to move between the online and on campus programs. Such requests require the approval of the associate dean for educational programs (or designee). Moving between programs involves multiple considerations (see below), and may not be possible in all cases.

Decisions to move from the on-campus MSW program to the online MSW program (or vice-versa) will be provided in writing. Due to the significant implications of such changes, a program change will not be permitted more than once. Any future desire to change between programs would require a new application to their desired MSW program and a new admissions decision (note that admission is not guaranteed).

Critical considerations:

Switch from residential to online

● Students must initiate a conversation with their faculty advisor and request a student success meeting with key
members of the administrative team from the online program, the Office of Field Education and the Office of
Student Services and Enrollment Management to discuss the implications of this decision. Requests for a success
meeting are made through the faculty advisor or by contacting the Office of Student Services and Enrollment
Management.

● Unless the student has a field placement in which they can remain, students must allow at least 1 full semester for
the Office of Field Education to find, develop, and secure a new field placement for the student.

● Students should understand that the online program is a part-time program spread over 7 semesters, meaning that
students are not able to take more than 8 credits per semester. .

● There are probable financial implications of this switch. Students in the part time online program pay per credit
hour, which can be more expensive. Students will need to communicate with the Office of Student Services and
Enrollment Management and University Office of Financial Aid to further understand these implications on existing
aid, scholarships, and scholar program participation.

● Be aware that the online program only offers one curricular pathway: Interpersonal Practice in Integrated Health,
Mental Health and Substance Abuse.

courses, the field placement, and remaining credits the student has left to take in the program.
