Section 1.02.06: Registering for Over 18 Credit Hours
The University registration system will not permit a term enrollment over 18 credit hours for a full-time student without special approval from their individual school or department. Full-time MSW students may request permission to take more than 18 credits by completing the Petition to Register for Over 18 Credit Hours (https://ssw.umich.edu/assets/extended-credits/?page=form ). Students will need to provide a detailed explanation of their need to enroll in the additional credits and of their ability to manage and effectively learn with this high credit load. It is recommended that students discuss their plan with their academic advisor or program manager before submitting their request. These forms will be reviewed by the Technical Advising Team and a decision finalized by the MSW Program Director.
For some requests, the technical advising team will contact the student to seek additional information and ensure confidence in the student's plan. This may include:
• Communication with the student's advisor for confirmation and input • Assessment of the student's academic history • Consideration of the student's experience with employment and fieldwork • Evaluation of the course structure • Exploration of alternative semester options
Please note that approval of over 21 credits is extremely rare and that no requests of over 24 credits will be granted.
