Harnessing the Power of Data to Improve the Quality of Life for Children

Associate Professors Brian Perron and Joe Ryan are partnering with the State of Michigan to help vulnerable children. They are co-directors of the Child and Adolescent Data Lab, a research center focused on using data to improve policy and practice decisions in child welfare and juvenile justice.

The Child and Adolescent Data Lab partners with the State to collect, collate and analyze large data sets from schools, health and human services and the juvenile justice system. “The State has access to increasing amounts of data about children but they don’t have the expertise to merge their data and identify the real problems,” said Joe Ryan, co-director of the lab. With expertise from the lab, the State uses data sets to craft policies and solutions for vulnerable children.

The Child and Adolescent Data Lab also provides research internships for students to engage in analyzing large data sets.
