Shanna Katz Kattari

Postdoctoral Fellow & LEO Adjunct Lecturer

Shanna is a prospective research fellow that will begin with the SSW Curtis Center on 9/1/2017. Shanna Katz Kattari, M.Ed. is a PhD candidate at the University of Denver's Graduate School of Social Work and is expected to graduate in June 2017. Her background is as a board certified sexologist, experienced educator, and social justice advocate. Her research focuses on understanding how power, privilege and oppression systematically marginalize, exclude, and discriminate against people regarding their identities/expressions through negative attitudes, policies reinforcing oppression, oppressive actions and isolation. Her work currently centers on disabled people and ableism, and transgender/gender non-conforming identities and transphobia, all using an intersectional lens, examining health disparities within these communities. She is also interested in examining sexuality in marginalized communities, particularly LGBTQ individuals & people with disabilities.
Shanna has been working in the fields of sexuality and social justice since receiving her Master's of Education in Human Sexuality Education from Widener University. In her work as a sexuality educator and diversity/inclusivity consultant, Shanna has worked with organizations such as The Colorado Department of Public Health Education, Arizona State University, Texas Department of Health, the Mayo Clinic, and the American Medical Students Association’s sexual health scholars program to bring LGBTQ and disability inclusivity to medicine, and with many colleges and universities to offer accessible sex education on campus. Additionally, she has several popular press books on the market, writes for several publications, and has served on the board of directors for the Colorado Organization for Latina Opportunity and Reproductive Rights. She values translational research that benefits the communities being researched, and strongly believes in making research accessible to not only academics but also to society at large.
