  1. Social Work in Political Action, Careers, and the MasterTrack™ Certificate- Information Session

    November 12, 2020 - 3:00pm to 4:30pm

    Join us from 3 to 4:30 p.m. EST on Thursday, November 12th to explore the role of social workers in political action and the Social Work: Practice, Policy, and Research MasterTrack™ Certificate from the University of Michigan School of Social Work. During this session, you will hear from Kristin Seefeldt, Associate Professor of Social Work & Public Policy, who will discuss why it is vital for social workers to be involved in political action, Colleen Karim, Online Program Student Services Officer, who will share an overview of this MasterTrack Certificate, and Michelle Woods, Director of Career Services, who will explore the different career options social workers will have after earning this certificate and their MSW degree.

  2. Introduction to Budgeting and Fiscal Management

    November 13, 2020 - 9:00am to 12:00pm

    This course introduces budgeting and fiscal management as a decision tool and provides specific technology for participants' future use, including the index of difference, the MacMillian Matrix, and the Cafeteria Compensation tool. Various kinds of budgets and their presentation will help participants to develop an understanding of fiscal management in social work practice settings.

  3. ENGAGE: Food Justice Virtual Debrief

    With our power, resources, and knowledge - what can we do about food injustice in this country? How do we address the policies that have been strategically put into place to deprive some, but not others? Join us for a special debrief session to discuss the connection of food justice to historic social policies, racism, and other social justice issues. Students, faculty, and staff doing work on food and environmental justice are encouraged to join and share their endeavors, and discussion on how the school can better integrate food and environmental justice into its curriculum, field experiences, and student learning is welcome and encouraged.

    Attending this session counts for field credit. Please document your attendance and contact your field faculty supervisor for information.

  4. SSW Book Club

    The SSW Book Club will meet at noon via Zoom to discuss the award-winning YA novel, Piecing Me Together by Renée Watson.

    The Office of Global Activities is proud to host an international student alumni panel as a part of International Education Week (IEW), a week dedicated to celebrating the benefits of international education and exchange worldwide. Each panelist will discuss their experience after graduating from U-M SSW with their MSW degree, their current position, and what it was like using their MSW degree either upon returning to their home country or remaining in the U.S. Attendees are encouraged to submit questions before the event.   8. The Michigan Healthy Start Program: Strategies to Engage Fathers in Social Work Practice

    November 18, 2020 - 12:00pm to 1:00pm

    In this webinar, Dr. Shawna J. Lee will describe working with Healthy Start programs throughout the state to develop, implement, and evaluate a father engagement home visitation program. The goal of the father home visitation program was to increase fathers' participation in Healthy Start home visits and to increase fathers' knowledge of infant health and developmental milestones. The Healthy Start program targets low-income mothers in Detroit, Flint, Kalamazoo, Grand Rapids, Lansing, and through the Inter-tribal Council of Michigan. The Healthy Start fatherhood program provided father-friendly parent education and home visitation by a fatherhood-focused community health worker.

    This intermediate-level webinar is approved for one synchronous interactive continuing education contact hour.

  10. CASC + ENGAGE: Racial Equity in Washtenaw County

    November 19, 2020 - 12:00pm to 1:30pm

    It is essential to connect our critical analysis of social justice issues to multi-level collective action for systemic and institutional change. Join us on September 19, from 12 pm-1:30 pm, for a special joint-session in partnership with CASC to explore how racial and socioeconomic inequity in Washtenaw County is connected to historic and ongoing discriminatory policies and practices. This virtual discussion will feature social workers in the field, CASC alumni, among others, discussing the history of racial inequity in Washtenaw county, its connection to the present, the role of social work practice in addressing this issue, and the activists leading change.

    Attendees will learn about the racial equity issues in Washtenaw county, how historic and ongoing policies have created it, and the institutions and infrastructures in place that uphold it. Attendees will learn about racial inequity in housing, education, socioeconomic, among other indicators. The session will also feature current social workers and activists working to address racial inequity in Washtenaw county, and present ways to get involved.

    Hear from CASC and social work alumni engaged in fighting for equity in Washtenaw County, including Clinical Assistant Professor Justin Hodge, Washtenaw County Commissioner Felicia Brabec, and others. Associate Professor and CASC Director Katie Richards-Schuster, and CASC Assistant Director Amber Wiliams, will also join us to share how we move from critical analysis to action for equitable change.
