  1. Working with Couples in Therapy

    October 3, 2019 - 5:00pm to 8:00pm

    This mini-course is designed to familiarize students with the current theories of couple therapy. Selected empirically supported models utilized in couple therapy will be examined The course also looks at some of the key issues and challenges faced by therapists who provide couple therapy. This mini-course will be skill based and focus on helping students to learn effective approaches to working with couples in therapy.

  3. Alumni Webinar Series: Collaborating Across Boundaries

    October 4, 2019 - 3:00pm to 5:00pm

    This webinar, taught by SSW alumnus Russ Linden, describes the practice of collaboration through the lens of two case examples in which collaborative leaders overcame enormous barriers in pursuit of their shared goals.

    We discuss the nature of collaborative leadership, six key factors that promote collaboration, and how to address many collaboration hurdles.

  4. CASC Undergraduate Minor Student Organization Grant Deadline

    The CASC Minor Student organization grant provides funding for declared students engaged in social justice and social action programs, initiatives, and projects. If you are a member of a student organization seeking funding for materials, supplies, space, food, or other related expenses, apply online using the CASC Minor Funding Form.

  5. Motivational Interviewing for Social Workers

    October 5, 2019 (all day)

    Utilizing numerous materials including the Professional Training Videotape Series developed by William R. Miller and Stephen Rollnick, this five-week series of 3-hour instruction and skill-building sessions will provide a basic introduction to Motivational Interviewing. Using the video material and supplemental handouts, along with lecture, role-playing and group discussion, this course will lay a foundation for participants to begin to develop their clinical skills in helping people accomplish change in areas of difficult behavior.

  7. Substance Use and Neuroscience: A Social Work Perspective

    October 5, 2019 - 9:00am to 5:00pm

    Perhaps now more than ever, social work scientists and practitioners alike affirm the need to fully understand the variability of substance use behaviors, including substance misuse, abuse and dependence, from a multidisciplinary approach. However, the literature and practice with regard to substance use and neuroscience in the context of social work remain in its infancy. Neuroscience is concerned with better understanding brain function and structure across the lifespan, including the use of innovative methods such as functional magnetic resonance imaging. This mini-course will provide an introduction to substance use and neuroscience in the context of social work and cover topics such as the ethical and legal aspects in neuroscience, potential alterations in brain function (e.g., cognitive) and structure (e.g., D2 dopamine receptor) linked to substance use behaviors, gene x environment interaction (e.g., neurogenetics), and the developmental and cultural aspects of neuroscience.   8. Immigration Enforcement, Human Rights, and Social Justice

    October 5, 2019 - 9:00am to 5:00pm

    This mini-course focuses on the real community and personal impact of a public policy with sweeping national controversy, many deaths, and significant questions about social justice, racial discrimination, and even intent in the constitution. Because it is a mini-course, rather than a full course, this course will concentrate on one aspect of immigration policy? undocumented immigrants and the public policy strategy of enforcement for undocumented immigrants at the border and in the interior of the country. Along with discussion of the policies and practices of enforcement, we will bring local enforcement activities to the table and examine their impact on people, families, and Michigan communities. The discussion will have a global, national, state, and a local component. Students in this course will acquire the skills to critically analyze this aspect of immigration policy and its controversies. and about community and organization responses and activism.

  10. DEI Summit 2019: Community Assembly & Discussion

    October 7, 2019 - 10:00am to 11:30am

    The 2019 DEI Summit Community Assembly & Discussion highlights Year 3 progress of the U-M DEI Strategic Plan and kicks off the Year 4 implementation.

    This year's keynote speaker features Van Jones--political commentator, author, and host of CNN's The Redemption Project and The Van Jones Show--followed by a roundtable discussion involving campus-based initiatives. The event will also include remarks from U-M President Mark Schlissel and senior leadership.

    Van Jones is President & Founder of the nonprofit, Dream Corps -- a justice incubator that houses the following initiatives: #cut50, #YesWeCode, #GreenForAll, and #LoveArmy. All with the overarching goal to create innovative solutions that "close prison doors and open doors of opportunity." Van has also led a number of other social and environmental justice enterprises, including The Ella Baker Center for Human Rights and Color of Change.

    A Yale-educated attorney, Van has written three New York Times Bestsellers. In 2009, Van worked as the green jobs advisor to the Obama White House.
