Advancing Trauma Informed Skills and Practices with Children
April 5, 2019 - 9:00am to 12:15pm
Advancing Trauma Informed Skills and Practices will give participants the opportunity to gain advanced understanding of the skills and strategies of working with traumatized clients, while also addressing questions about secondary trauma and self-care. Participants will examine how their client's experiences and behaviors influence the therapeutic alliance and also trigger reactions on the part of practitioners that can interfere with client progress.
Participants will travel on a macro to micro level journey to discover what they need to better serve their clients and also help themselves by developing effective self-care strategies. The session will incorporate core concepts for understanding and treating trauma and, skills of reflective, evidence-based practices.Registration for this course is closed. Social Media for Social Change

This minicourse teaches participants to use social media as a tool for community organizing. Participants will use the internet and social networks as easily integrated spaces designed to share information with peers and provide quick ways to organize communities and increase the reach of a group's voice. This minicourse covers the following topics: (1) Relationship building via Facebook & Twitter; (2) Facebook content for organizers; (3) Blogging hosts and content ideas; (4) Twitter content for organizers; (5) Use of video; (6) Mobile social networking; (7) Location-based social networks; (8) Online safety; (9) Discussions of: "safe" spaces online, online dialogue, and traditional organizing methods. Core competencies including critical thinking, social justice, and social equity are also examined and discussed in detail.

Democratizing Finance

The University of Michigan School of Social Work's Learning Community on Poverty and Inequality (LCPI) and the Center on Assets, Education, and Inclusion (AEDI) are pleased to invite Cliff Rosenthal on Friday, April 5th from 2:00pm to 4:00pm to discuss his new book, Democratizing Finance. Cliff is visiting the School of Social Work to discuss this important writing and his work in the credit union movement. As part of this work, Cliff helped found the US Department of Treasury's Community Development Financial Institutions (CDFIs) and Inclusiv (the national network of community development credit unions [CDCUs]), and he served as a lead administrator at the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB).
Panelists will reflect on Cliff's remarks and discuss their own leadership and expertise on finance and community development. The audience is invited to participate in Questions & Answers with Cliff and panelists.
