  4. Current Treatment for Trauma Survivors

    This course addresses the theoretical framework of trauma and trauma treatment from a culturally and philosophically diverse perspective. It seeks to provide information about why and how trauma and PTSD occur and how trauma treatment is affected by type of trauma experience, socioeconomic and cultural factors, individual personality and family functioning. Attention is focused on life span development and the meaning of trauma at different ages. Various types of trauma and trauma treatment are discussed from an individual, family, and socio/cultural perspective. The importance of understanding trauma and its relationship to grief and loss will be addressed. Coping and resiliency in surviving and recovering from trauma are explored, emphasizing the diversity of human response and focusing on the significance of social groups in integrating trauma. The formation and practice of rituals, and diversity in religious and spiritual experience as a component of coping with trauma will be discussed. Trauma...

  5. New Instructor Orientation

    July 13, 2018 - 8:30am to 12:00pm

    An orientation and training session for all new instructors. The session will get new instructors oriented to the U-M School of Social Work curriculum and how the courses fit together, explain expectations of our instructors and what to expect in our social work classrooms, provide instructors with information about resources available to aide their teaching, and more.

  7. Exploring the Spectrum of Gender Expression A lecture & discussion

    July 19, 2018 - 7:00pm to 8:30pm

    In mid-July OLLI presents a lecture on gender non-conforming persons in the Summer Lecture Series, “Voices of Local Minorities.” This After 5 program is a follow up to that lecture. Our panel will share stories about personal struggles and rewards.

    Meet a married transman who is the father of two young children, a female Native American Shaman healer, and a woman who identifies as gender non-conforming. Sarah Weinstein will act as panel moderator. Join us in this discussion on gender perspectives.

    After 5 events are open to the public, and do not require OLLI membership.

    July 28, 2018 - 10:00am

    SSW Summer Commencement will be held at Hill Auditorium. A light reception including drinks and hors d'oeuvres will immediately follow at the School of Social Work in the Educational Conference Center (ECC).

    All MSW degree candidates planning to graduate in August 2018 are encouraged to participate in Summer Commencement. Graduates with accessibility concerns should contact the Office of Student Services as soon as possible at ssw.oss@umich.edu or 734-936-0961.
