    Queer Advocacy Coalition (QAC) would like to invite you to attend our End of the Year Quixer on Monday, April 2nd from 12-2pm in room 1636! 

    This event will allow for students and staff to mix, mingle and network before the term is over! At our Quixer we will be accepting nominations and voting for anyone who would like to serve on the Eboard of QAC for the next school year! 

    Lunch is provided! We can't wait to see you there! All are welcome!!!

    Why on this night?: A Passover and Social Justice Discussion

    Please join the Jewish Communal Leadership Program for a Passover-inspired evening of questions about social justice. Each year, we come together on Passover to remember our story of liberation. This year, Passover falls on the 50th anniversary of Martin Luther King Jr’s Assassination. Join the Jewish Communal Leadership Program as we remember Dr. King’s legacy and explore how the Passover seder can guide us in navigating questions of social justice, both here at the SSW and in our larger global community.

    WHEN: 5:10 PM WED APRIL 4TH

    WHERE: The School of Social Work, Educational Conference Center -Room 1840

    WHO: Anyone who is interested in social justice.

  5. The Inaugural Community Action and Research Conference The Inaugural Community Action and Research Conference

    The Community Action and Research Learning Community invite three activists engaged scholars from different fields who will provide their perspectives on Community Action and Research in their work. Here are some details about the speakers:

    Sharon Egretta Sutton is professor emerita of architecture, urban design and planning, and social work at the University of Washington, where she served on the faculty 1998-2016. She became an architecture educator in 1975, having taught at Pratt Institute, Columbia University, the University of Cincinnati, and the University of Michigan where she became the first African American woman to become a full professor in an accredited architectural degree program.

    Monica White is Professor of Environmental Justice at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.Her research engages communities of color and grassroots organizations that are involved in the development of sustainable community food systems as a strategy to respond to issues of hunger and food inaccessibility. Her publications include, "Sisters of the Soil: Urban Gardening as Resistance Among Black Women in Detroit" and "D-Town Farm: African American Resistance to Food Insecurity and the Transformation of Detroit."

    Kevin Nadal is Professor of Psychology at John Jay College of Criminal Justice and the Graduate Center (CUNY). His main areas of research have been Microaggressions, Gender & Sexuality Issues, Filipino American issues and Systemic Oppression in Criminal Justice. Nadal has served in many other leadership roles in the greater psychology community, as well as in organizations committed to uplifting communities of color and LGBTQ people.

  6. Major Review of MSW Curriculum: Part 2

    Join us for continued efforts on revising the MSW curriculum. The Curriculum Committee hosted a Review Session on January 19th that highlighted trends in the social work education, the profession, and higher education, as well as where we would like to go in the future with this program. We now want to focus on making the recommendations you made on January 19th, a reality for the MSW curriculum and move this endeavor forward. We will send you materials ahead of time to review in preparation for this session, and we hope that you will come with an open mind, ready for action!

  7. Social Work and Sports

    April 6, 2018 - 9:00am to 5:00pm

    A growing body of research documents the positive health and mental health benefits of participating in organized sports and recreation. While much of the current research is focused on youth participation in sports, there is also evidence of how participation in sports can benefit people across the life span and from different ethnic and socioeconomic groups. This workshop will examine how social work values, concepts, and interventions on both the micro and macro levels can enhance sport activities. Specific strategies such as strength-based coaching, team-building, conflict resolution, family collaboration, diversity training, community engagement, advocacy and policy development will be discussed. Model interdisciplinary programs that serve at-risk youth, older adults, individuals with disabilities and other special populations will be highlighted.

  8. Teaching Support: Continuing Instructor Education

    This fall, the SSW is hosting a regular series of support activities around teaching. These have been designed as a result of requests from faculty. 

    Continuing instructor education. Building off our our spring faculty development session on inclusive teaching, we will have one faculty development session in the fall and two in the winter semester. CEUs will be available. Topics to be announced soon.

  9. Learning Community on Poverty and Inequality (LCPI) Event with Jessica Gordon Nembhard Learning Community on Poverty and Inequality (LCPI) Event with Jessica Gordon Nembhard

    April 6, 2018 - 12:00pm to 1:30pm

    This event will feature a presentation titled, "Cooperatives and community-based asset building in black communities" presented by Jessica Gordon Nembhard, PhD, Professor, Department of Africana Studies, John Jay College of Criminal Justice.

    In this presentation, Dr. Gordon Nembhard traces the racial wealth inequality movement since 1999 and her frustrations with realistically addressing wealth inequality and racial wealth gaps. She outlines the journey from understanding the importance of wealth in African American and other communities, to addressing collective structures for accumulating assets and wealth for low-income people of color, and explores the role cooperatives play in creating community and collective wealth.

  10. Social Work Services That Make a Difference: Meaningful Supports for Transgender Youth and Their Families

    This course will offer a working definition of terms, including Transgender, Gender Identity, Gender Expression, Intersex, Gender Nonconforming, Non Binary, Intersex, Gender Transition, and Ally.
