ENGAGE: Immigrants in Michigan: The Untold Story
April 1, 2021 - 12:00pm to 1:30pm
Immigrants have made vast contributions to this state - economically, politically, and socially. The fabric of American society was created by the contributions of a diverse range of immigrants. As a nation, however, we continue to suppress and demonize immigrants. This session explores the untold story of immigrants in Michigan, from undocumented and documented populations, to immigration issues and struggles that we, as social workers, are obligated to be knowledgeable about.
Special guests include Executive Director of the Office of Global Michigan; Executive Director of the International Institute, Wojciech Zolnowski; Executive Director and Founder of the African Bureau for Immigrant and Social Affairs, Fatou Seydi-Sarr; and founder of the Washtenaw Immigration Rights Coalition (WIRC), Laura Sanders.
Field credit is offered to students attending this session. Students should check with their field faculty supervisors for more information.

ENGAGE: Storytelling for Social Justice
April 8, 2021 - 12:00pm to 1:30pm
Storytelling, or listening to the stories of others and sharing your own stories, builds the foundation of human interaction. Telling others how we got here and why we care about an issue builds connection, allows us to share our values, and create meaning. The art of public narrative is used in all aspects of social work practice - from helping our clients rewrite the stories they tell themselves, to helping communities and groups galvanize social change, to helping policy makers and politicians tell a “story of self” while creating a “story of us.” Join us for a special discussion featuring the former Chief Storyteller for the City of Detroit and current NYU Journalism Professor, Aaron Foley; current Chief Storyteller for the City of Detroit, Eric Thomas; and Detroit poet, activist, and author, Jessica Care Moore.
Field credit is offered to students attending this session. Students should check with their field faculty supervisors for more information.

Undoing Racism Community Meeting
April 15, 2021 - 12:00pm to 2:00pm
Join us for our April meeting to build community collaboration and continue the conversation about anti-racist practice and actions.
Undoing Racism is a community collective of students, staff, and faculty in the School of Social Work dedicated to fighting white supremacy at individual, school and structural levels. This workgroup was established in 2019 after the community took part in the People's Institute for Survival and Beyond Undoing Racism workshops, and builds on their anti-racist community organizing model. Our work has been largely focused on building collective community and emphasizes the role that white members of our community must take on to dismantle and undo white supremacist structures.
We know there are many important efforts going on at SSW; Undoing Racism will amplify all these efforts, including the advocacy sparked by MSW and Doctoral students. No matter what role you play here at SSW, you are always welcome and encouraged to come to Undoing Racism meetings.

The Nervous System's Response to ADHD and Toxic Stress
April 23, 2021 - 9:00am to 12:00pm
This course will build on the previous course called Trauma or ADHD: Trauma-Informed Tools for Working with ADHD; however, it is not a prerequisite for this course. Participants will be given an overview of the similarities between ADHD and the body's response to toxic stress levels. We will discuss why a more somatic approach tends to have more effective results. We will address how the current system of mental health increases the disparity between majority and minority cultures and how that affects minorities of color who disproportionately encounter toxic stress.
This will be a body centered approach providing specific tools for working with ages 9-99. The facilitators will explain the Wave Model based on experiential therapy and the work of (Dana) Maurie Lung, PhD, LMHC, LMFT; Gary Stauffer, LMSW; and Tony Alvarez, LMSW. Participants will be invited to practice the tools with each other or in a group while being supported by the facilitators.Registration for this course is closed. Anti-racism and the SSW: Where are we and where are we headed together?
April 25, 2021 - 3:00pm to 4:00pm
We invite you to a community conversation about anti-racism and the SSW. We will use the time to talk about where we are now as a school community, as well as where we are headed, together. This is a time for conversation - ask questions, raise concerns, and talk together as a school community. To aid the conversation, space will be limited. (We know it's coming up soon, so if you miss it or you're loaded down with finals, don't fear! If there is a lot of interest in this topic, we can hold another session soon.)
About the format. A few students and faculty have decided to try something different - smaller community conversations. Our hope is that this can take topics that lend themselves better to verbal dialogue off of email and into a face-to-face (or screen-to-screen!) environment. We will draw heavily on practices from intergroup dialogue and restorative justice.
Zoom link will be sent out the morning of the event.
