Join the Global Social Work Practice Pathway and the Office of Global Activities for an alumni panel focused on global social work careers both in the U.S. and abroad. During the panel, SSW MSW graduates will share information about their current jobs, the job search process, advice they have for current students, and what they are looking forward to in the future. Time will be included for Q&A with the panelists.

Meet the Panelists:  Catherine Calvo

Grass Roots Development Officer, United Nations Foundation
Washington, DC

As an experienced nonprofit professional, Catherine Calvo (MSW) is dedicated to working alongside individuals and organizations to achieve lasting impact and sustainable change. She currently leads the Grassroots Development portfolio on The United Nations Foundation’s malaria elimination campaign, Nothing But Nets. Prior to joining UNF, Catherine served as a nonprofit fundraising consultant and in various development roles for international development and human rights-focused NGOs including Amnesty International, Grameen America, and WaterAid America. Catherine received her MSW from the University of Michigan in 2017, where her studies focused on social policy, program evaluation, and global social work practice. Her professional and academic endeavors have led her to call Italy, Thailand, and Israel home and have further perpetuated her love of travel, food, and experiencing new cultures.

Esther Whang

Specialist, Global Aftercare, International Justice Mission
Washington, DC

Esther Whang (MSW ’06) has worked in international development for the past fifteen years. She currently works at International Justice Mission focusing on scaling aftercare programs at IJM globally to provide trauma-informed services to survivors of violence and abuse. She is responsible for global program indicators and outcomes, curriculum and resource development for systems-strengthening, partnership strategies, and ensuring survivor-centered and survivor-led programming. She previously worked at IJM as the Aftercare Specialist for Southeast Asia and, prior to that, spent nine years working for World Education, Inc., supporting and managing projects across South and Southeast Asia in areas of trafficking prevention, safe migration, education, and livelihood development. Esther is passionate about strengthening government systems and the social service workforce and investing in the capacity building of community-based organization

Josh Lee

Psychosocial Technical Advisor, SEED Foundation
Irbīl, Iraq

Josh Lee (MSW) is a clinical social worker with four years of international humanitarian and development experience in Egypt, Indonesia, and Iraq. He is currently the Psychosocial Technical Advisor for SEED Foundation in northern Iraq and works with survivors of violence, including refugees, internally displaced persons, survivors of trafficking, and survivors of gender-based violence. Josh graduated from the University Michigan School of Social Work in 2015 and trained with the Yale Child Study Center's Advanced Clinical Social Work Fellowship and the Veterans Affairs Psychosocial Rehabilitation Fellowship post-graduation. 

Océane Langreney

School Social Worker, Liceo Boston
Bogotá, Colombia

Océane Langreney (MSW) is a French/American clinical social worker who has been living in Bogotá, Colombia for the past three years. She is currently working as a School Social Worker at an alternative Elementary school. She graduated from the University of Michigan School of Social Work in 2017 and has a history of working within the educational, criminal justice, early intervention and refugee systems. Océane is particularly passionate about child welfare, social-emotional learning and child development.
