The Role of Civil Disobedience in Collective Action

After the murder of George Floyd, Colin Kapearnick famously took a knee at an NFL football game, receiving unjustified backlash. It wasn’t until giant corporations, like Nike, voiced their support of Colin - and the #BlackLivesMatter movement in general - that others also came to his defense. But civil disobedience in the name of social justice isn’t new, and it isn’t new from professional athletes. The Black Power gestures at the 1968 Olympics killed careers, and helped galvanize a civil rights movement. In the digital age, gestures, small catchphrases, hashtags, and stories of 140 characters can kill careers, change policies, and save lives. Join us to discuss the role of social media and civil disobedience in political and social movements. Special guests TBA.
