Advanced Standing Peer Consultation Seminar

Prerequisites: Must be taken concurrently with SW 691

Course Description

This seminar is a course designed to provide opportunities for advanced standing students to learn the art of peer consultation. This course is open to students in any practice method concentration and practice area and is focused on providing students a safe milieu to process field related experiences with experienced faculty/student peer facilitators leading the sessions. Students will be provided opportunities to identify, link and document knowledge and skills across their educational, professional and personal experiences related to field. Students will explore their roles as learners, leaders and professionals as they uncover tacit knowledge and reflect on social justice principles.

Objectives

The objectives of this mini-course are to provide students in SW 691: Advanced Field Instruction an environment whereby each will learn how to:

· Function as a “peer consultant” within a small group format by participating in readings, discussion,
feedback, and supporting each other regarding advanced field experiences.

· Strengthen problem solving, negotiation, collaboration, consultation, and conflict resolution skills
related to advanced field experiences.

· Integrate course work with practice skills.

Design

This course is a 1-credit mini-course that will meet for a total of 7 sessions over the course of the term for 2 hours each session (14 hours total). Session dates are listed on the previous page. Class meeting time will generally be devoted to
o student initiated field related learning discussions, case-based discussion methodology , peer consultations, and review of relevant readings/resources
o course themes related to the social work competencies reflect the objectives found on the Advanced Educational Agreements will be used to frame discussions and presentations
o students will be expected to function as “peer consultants” during class time and in web-based discussions via U-M Canvas
o write a final reflective paper addressing personal and professional growth over the course of the term focusing on creating their professional career map
