Registration for the edX MicroMasters courses and MicroMasters Certificate Program is closed. The following information is for students who have completed or are currently enrolled in the MicroMasters courses and are interested in obtaining an MSW Degree. 

Students with three years or more of human service experience may apply for the MicroMasters MSW program. Students who meet the MicroMasters MSW program criteria will be able to complete the Master of Social Work degree in three to six terms of on-campus enrollment.

Admissions Requirements

  • Meet all requirements for application to the MSW program. Review MSW admissions criteria.
  • Have three years or more of human service-related experience.
  • Complete MicroMasters courses with certification and successfully pass the U-M SSW Comprehensive MicroMasters exam.
  • Advanced standing applicants are not eligible for the MicroMasters MSW.
  • Transfer applicants from another MSW program are not eligible for the MicroMasters MSW.

Note: the MicroMasters Certificate alone is a non-credit bearing credential

October 2020 – November 30, 2020 Meet with an MSW admissions counselor for an in person or phone appointment prior to submitting an application, if necessary
As soon as possible Apply to the Online/and or On-Campus MSW program
October 2020 – November 30, 2020 Register for all MicroMasters Courses. (No registrations will be accepted after this date)
October 2020 – March 29, 2021 Complete MicroMasters Courses (No extensions will be possible)
By April 1, 2021 Provide the School of Social Work with copies of your certificate of completion for all six MicroMasters courses
April 1, 2021 – April 30, 2021 Complete the Comprehensive Evaluation (No extensions will be possible)

Each MicroMasters student will have an individual course planning appointment to plan the completion of required credits. MicroMasters students can complete the MSW degree in three semesters as a full-time student or over six semesters as a part-time student. Note that field begins in the first fall term.

Program Requirements

The 2020-2021 MicroMasters MSW program requires the following:

  • Completion of the six online MicroMasters courses with certification by March 29, 2021:
    • Social Work Practice: Advocating Social Justice and Change
    • Social Work Practice with Individuals Families and Small Groups
    • Diversity and Social Justice in Social Work
    • Social Work Practice in Community Organization, Management and Policy/Evaluation
    • Social Work: Research
    • Social Welfare Policy and Services
  • Completion of the Comprehensive Evaluation by April 30, 2021
  • Completion of required MSW program courses in three to six terms of enrollment. Courses held on campus at the UM School of Social Work in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

Financial Aid

There is no financial aid available for the online MicroMasters certificate courses. If accepted into the MicroMasters MSW program at the University of Michigan, students may apply for grants, scholarships, Direct Loans, GradPlus Loans, and college work study.
