Substance Abuse

About the Presenters Melnee McPherson

Melnee D. Mc Pherson, MSW, PhD, Intern in Social Work and Sociology. Melnee specializes in substance abuse, particularly as related to women and minorities.

Substance abuse is a major public health problem. For parents who abuse licit and illicit substances, child health and welfare are often compromised. The abuse of substances often impairs judgement and renders the parent incapable of providing sustained care, supervision, and guidance.

The material in the substance abuse module includes slides, reference materials, and an audio presentation which is based on a videotaped session conducted with community professionals. Held in Washtenaw County, Michigan on June 25, 28, and 29, 1999, the presentation covers issues relating to parental substance use: general trends and patterns of use; patterns of use among women in the U.S.; drugs of abuse and their effects; the impact of parental substance abuse on children and child welfare; a model of intervention and treatment; and, screening and assessment tools.
