Resources for Teaching in Times of Crisis

U-M School of Public Health

The resources below come from Professor Gary W. Harper, Department of Health Behavior and Health Education, University of Michigan School of Public Health

Secondary Traumatic Stress (STS): "Secondary traumatic stress is the emotional duress that results when an individual hears about the firsthand trauma experiences of another. Its symptoms mimic those of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Accordingly, individuals affected by secondary stress may find themselves re-experiencing personal trauma or notice an increase in arousal and avoidance reactions related to the indirect trauma exposure. They may also experience changes in memory and perception; alterations in their sense of self-efficacy; a depletion of personal resources; and disruption in their perceptions of safety, trust, and independence." (NCTSN)

  1. I attached a handout on secondary trauma. It's from the National Child for Traumatic Stress Network (NCTSN). Even though the primary focus is on children/adolescents, there is great information in the attached document for adults as well, and the NCTSN is an excellent and well respected resource.
  2. The following link is to an excellent and straightforward site from the American Psychological Association on recovering from trauma and disasters. It covers common reactions to traumatic social events/disasters and suggestions for coping. http://www.apa.org/helpcenter/recovering-disasters.aspx
  3. I also attached a booklet on PTSD from the National Center for PTSD. It has a focus on Veterans, but presents great information for everyone.
  4. For those interested in developing or implementing a larger level response to trauma associated with this event (or other disasters/traumas), Psychological First Aid is the best resource I have found. We have used elements of this in the USA, Kenya and Haiti. You can download all of the resources at the following site: http://www.nctsn.org/content/psychological-first-aid
  5. One last resources is a website that NCTSN has put together specifically for Pride Month that is primarily focused on LGBT children and adolescents, but some also apply to University students. http://www.nctsn.org/resources/public-awareness/lesbian-gay-bisexual-and-transgender-pride-month
